Zebu Signal Horn
The butcher and the mail.
The signal horn is one of the original signal instruments. In medieval times, long before there was an organized postal system, by blowing on horns like this one butchers gave notice that they were ready to take along letters before setting off to purchase cattle. There are still situations in everyday life today that call for a signal, for instance when the roast goose is done, the departing for holiday or the imminent arrival of relatives traveling from afar who wish to be announced according to the old look-out custom. With a little practice one can produce a deep, vibrating tone that carries quite far: moisten your lips and depending on your mood, place the mouthpiece in the middle or in the corner of your mouth. While puffing with the correct embouchure (lip position) blow steadily and calmly through the horn.
