Wool Blanket Basket Weave
Utterly Norwegian. Røros Tweed.
One of the aspects that make the Norwegian textile company Røros Tweed special is the high degree of its vertical range of manufacture. Their in-house manufacturing includes even the design process. Designs are developed in cooperation with well-known local and international designers. And it’s a matter of honouring local traditions and skills for Røros Tweed that all production processes — from shearing to weaving — are based in Norway. But there is more to it.
Built Upon a Long Tradition.
The initial motivation behind starting something new in the Norwegian mining town of Røros was philanthropical. The industrialist Peder Hiort (1715–1789) bequeathed his fortune to a foundation to purchase wool so that the needy of Røros could use it for their woven piecework, for which the foundation also paid them.
Røros Tweed still lives up to this tradition of responsible trade and continues to support the basic tenets of ecological production paired with technological advancement set in motion by the Hiort Foundation. Products are designed and manufactured in such a way that the materials used can be reused and reintegrated into the material cycle during production. This saves resources, reduces the cost of materials and minimises waste.
The Wool from Røros.
Røros Tweed only uses wool sources from sheep farms in the area. The climate there is extremely harsh, but the advantage is that there is no pest control since the wool is insect-free, and needs no chemical treatment.
