‘Wichern’ Advent Wreath
Article Number 26004
The German Advent Wreath in its most traditional form.
This original Advent Wreath-cum-Christmas Calendar of hot-dip galvanized steel is called ‘Wichernkranz’ in German, named after its inventor, the religious teacher Johann Hinrich Wichern (1808-1881), who used to gather together children from the poorest families and move with them into an old farmhouse known as the ‘Rauhe Haus’ (literally: raw house). During Advent the children kept asking him when Christmas was coming, so he made a wooden ‘wreath’ for them out of a wagon-wheel with 19 small and 4 large candles. This was the original model for the well-known Advent wreath. The inside of our wreath has room for decoration and candles (not exceeding 5.5 cm Ø) for all the days of Advent. The ‘Wichern’ Advent Wreath comes as a table model, but can be hung up if required: we offer suitable hanging materials for this purpose.
