Using Blue to Make Things White Again.
Ultramarine washing blue targets precisely the removal of the “middle yellow”, which occurs especially in older whites which start to yellow. Because of the complementarity effect of colours, the result is pure white. It has a physical effect too. Ultramarine absorbs ultraviolet light and returns it as visible light. The result: White that radiates light.
Just a Little Bit of Commodity Science: Laundry detergents.
Modern heavy-duty detergents contain lots of different substances which are required only for certain textiles, degrees of dirtiness and wash cycles, e.g. bleaches, which can account for up to 30% of a product. These are necessary for whitewashes, but are not good for coloured clothing, because they make the colours fade. The amount of fabric softener required depends on water hardness in your area, and on average, badly soiled laundry only happens once in every five washes (so much for synthetic stain removers). If only those laundry detergents that were necessary were used, this would save money, and be kinder to the environment and to the laundry itself. For this, a soap-based basic detergent (without stain remover, bleach, softener or fragrance) would normally suffice, with stain remover or oxygen bleach for heavily soiled or white laundry, gall soap for the “difficult stains”, a water softener for calcareous water, and a lavender, lemon or orange essential oil to give the laundry a fresh smell. Only with down, or special textiles such as linen, wool, and silk are special laundry detergents needed. The Manufactum range has the best on offer for you.
