It's standard equipment in Italian households. With a tomato press, you can process large quantities of aromatic puree from fresh ripe tomatoes, ideally from your own garden, as the basis for passata, sugo and other tomato products. Ours is manufactured by a firm in Turin which is one of the largest manufacturers of household appliances in Italy. It's the smallest hand-operated model from Tre Spade and is offered in Italy as an entry level device. An extra-long screw conveyor with sharp blades goes to work beneath the solid cast aluminium housing. Juice and pulp run into a dish underneath for further processing, while the stem, skin and seeds are cleanly removed and separately captured. It is recommended to quarter the larger tomatoes before loading them into the wide plastic funnel. Blanched whole tomatoes can also be processed, as is sometimes called for in Italian recipes.
