It underwent its own renaissance in the 17th century as the article of clothing worn by free-thinking citizens. Scha in Cologne manufactures this boiled wool knit cap as a cross between a Basque hat and a cap. The stiff tailored edge of the fabric adjusts to the forehead while a stitched-on elastic band makes for plenty of room and a good fit in the back.
