Black and White. Blanket Made of Peruvian Baby Alpaca.
This blanket is woven from soft, light, baby alpaca. Although baby alpaca often comes from the first shearing of the young animals, hair from the adult animals can also be called baby alpaca, if the fineness of the fibre is between 20.1 and 23 microns, which is of course extremely fine. Two threads are used here in the warp, one black and the other white; they are slightly twisted during weaving, thus giving the blanket its vibrant surface.
The blankets come from Royal Knit, a Peruvian family business with a network of small craft workshops in the poorest areas of Peru. At Royal Knit they are able to process Peru's best natural fibres under fair conditions. In the manufacturing process, they make a point of saving resources and protecting the environment and, not least, the health of their workers. Royal Knit engages in social projects, especially those that help women to become financially independent. In various training programs, organised by Royal Knit, they learn old and new craft techniques for textile production and are thus able to provide for their livelihood.
The wool processed here comes from animals in the Peruvian Andes. Alpaca is one of the most precious natural hairs. It is warmer and more durable than wool, and as soft and smooth as cashmere. As a hollow fibre, alpaca has particularly good heat-insulating properties, but above all, it feels pleasantly soft on the skin and does not cause any itchy reactions.
