The Red Wing '1178' Boot
Article Number 75334
The Red Wing 1178: the Pecos.
Sometimes called the 'Pecos', the 1178 became a cult boot soon after its introduction in the 1950s as a simple farmer's boot in America and Australia. It's remained unchanged since then, with its Goodyear welting and – like all Red Wings – mineral-oil-tanned leather. It's a really strong boot with leather a good 2 mm thick and ideal for all seasons – though we should add that the soles have next to no tread and are liable to lose their grip in icy conditions.
The inner sole is of shock-absorbent, long-life Poron, the mid-sole of Texon (rubberized cellulose fibres) and the shank of steel. The outer sole is of nitril cork (nitril rubber combined with cork granules) with the welcome property that it is both resistant to chemicals, petroleum, oil and heat, and at the same time won't leave ugly smears on the floor. With nailed, shock-absorbent heel.
Red Wing Shoe Company. Oil-Tanned and Goodyear Welted.
Work boots and shoes that are famed for their comfort and durability have been made in Red Wing, Minnesota since 1905. The full-grain cow hide used to make Red Wings are treated according to a special technique that was developed at the end of the 1940s and patented for Red Wing: The company purchases hides that have been pre-processed with chromium salts and then tans them using mineral oil, hence the term "oil-tanned". This gives the leather an oil content of 22% (8 to 10% is normal), which makes it exceptionally flexible, hard-wearing and water-repellent despite its thickness. The quality of the workmanship corresponds to the high quality of the leather. Red Wing shoes are mechanically welted using the complex Goodyear welt technique.
