General Information

A Proven Technique. Sand Casting.

The process that is used to produce this pendant was the predominant casting technique used for the production of jewellery until the 1970s: sand casting. Today the lost wax technique has all but replaced the more expensive sand casting, but the firm of Martin Guthmann still maintains contact to one of the last sand casting firms in Baden-Wuerttemberg.
A model of the pendant is first embedded in a mould filled with sand. Then the model is removed carefully, and the remaining cavity is filled with liquid silver. The caster uses a centrifugal caster, which forces more of the melt into the mould than if it were merely poured.
The air in the cavity escapes through the porous sand; the result is a particularly hard cast, which is conducive to sustaining an engraving, for example.
Untreated natural river sand is used. It is left damp, that is, not saturated with additional water or oil. After the pendant has cooled off a large part of the sand used can be used again.

From raw casting to a piece of jewellery.

The finished 925 raw silver cast is then processed in the Guthmann firm: the goldsmiths remove the casting flash with a saw and a file, and the casting is sanded where the sprue was sawed off. The piece of jewellery shows now the raw casting skin formed on the surface by the sand without any discontinuance. As a final step, the goldsmiths render the pendant black by uniformly oxidising it with Paris noble oxide.

May be ordered with an engraving.

An engraver will cut a deep, lightly glistening inscription in silver in the casting skin with a burin on request. Please refer to our Special Order Department via telephone at 0800-0960938.

Jewellery from Pforzheim. Martin Guthmann.

Making high-quality jewellery that’s affordable for more people was the idea the goldsmith Martin Guthmann had in 1906 for his jewellery manufacturing business. The business is run today in the fourth generation by his great grandson, with all production still located in the jewellery and gold centre of Pforzheim. Milled, stamped, drawn and cast parts in the factory are assembled by hand in smaller series. The designs include among other things old jewellery shapes and ornaments from the company’s archive which are recast and assembled with updated traditional manufacturing techniques.
