Top and Skittles.
Upper Austria, South Tyrol, Tyrol and Bavaria are the home ground of table skittles. The top is one of the oldest toys in the world; skittles have been around since the 14th century, and particularly popular in pubs since the 19th century. For reasons of space, smaller tables of wood and glass (often carved into the pub table) were often used in place of proper alleys.
Our skittles table is of tournament size. The skittles were set up for play on the marked areas with the ‘King’ – the skittle with the red dot – in the middle. The top was then set in motion on the hatched line. Table skittles is a really gripping game – just wait for the beech-wood top to whiz over the glass ‘alley’ in circles and clatter the skittles over!
