Skittles and Tops.
Even though it has many names and there is only one top, this version of "Skittles and Tops" is played in Upper Austria, Tyrol, South Tirol, and Bavaria. The spinning top is one of the oldest toys in the world while playing skittles has been a popular pastime since the 14th century. Its popularity spread during the 19th century, especially as a game played at inns and hostelries. To save space, people often used smaller tables of wood and glass instead of large skittle alleys. Some landlords even set up some of their pub tables with built-in skittle boards.
This is a tournament-size skittles table. The play starts with the skittles positioned on the marks, with the kingpin (the skittle with the red dot) in the middle. Then the top is spun from the green hatched line. As long as the spinning top stays within the rectangle marked at the start line, it can be stopped and spun again (with more verve or luck). No matter which of the many variations of the game you play, when the beech wood top whirls across the glass surface and sends the wooden skittles flying, amid much cheering, spectators and players alike are in for a thrill-packed game.
