Lauscha Christmas Baubles with White Ice Finish

General Information
Ice Glistening on the Fir Tree.
The Greiner-Mai glassworks in Lauscha has been in family hands for more than 150 years. According to documents dating from 1830, one of their ancestors, the Christmas tree ornament blower Christian Günter Greiner-Mai, produced small, hand-blown glass fruits, which were used for jewellery chains and jewellery. Shortly thereafter the first glass Christmas tree ornaments were created.
Then as now the baubles, fir cones, icicles, bells, or olives are hand blown from transparent glass cylinders with the help of the flame of a gas burner, shaped and dipped in a silver solution. The silver must dry a while before the ice finish is applied with a fine brush made of squirrel tail hair. Finally, the ornament is crowned with a little metal eye for hanging.
