In the Beginning Was the Lighter.
It took a while before Homo sapiens reinvented what earlier hominids knew as flint and steel as a cigarette lighter. The first modern lighters were manufactured at the beginning of the 19th century, and the pocket lighter was developed at the beginning of the 20th century. What they all have in common is a series of parts which are needed to make fire: a fuel (like benzene together with a cotton wick or gas), a spark making material (either flint or a piezoelectric crystal) and the spark inducing mechanism (like a friction wheel or striking iron). Tsubota Pearl, a metal-working firm in Tokyo, has been dedicated to the needs of committed smokers since 1952, with a product result corresponding to high standards. In addition to lighters, cigarette cases and ashtrays, Tsubota Pearl produces some items which can be used by non-smokers as well, like pocket mirrors and business card cases.
