Montagu's Harrier, Great Grey Owl, Young Owls in Their Downy Plumage. 20th-Century Drawings.
The Protestant theologian and biologist Otto Kleinschmidt (1870–1954) is today considered one of the pioneers of ornithology in Germany. During his lifetime his work as a draughtsman and taxidermist was highly esteemed. In 1935 Kleinschmidt's ornithological collection included almost 10,000 specimens. The publishers at Quelle & Meyer selected the motifs for these postcards from the early reference books drafted by Otto Kleinschmidt. There are full portraits of Montagu's Harrier, the Red Crossbill, the goshawk, the Lesser Grey Shrike, the Peregrine Falcon, Great Grey Owl, the starling, waxwing, and Red Kite – and some young owls in their downy plumage. Quelle & Meyer are especially well known for their scientific reference books and maps.
