Edition Klangschritte V: Angels and Animals
Somewhere Between Heaven and Earth.
What is a human being? Simply being able to pose this question is truly human. Where do I fit in between heaven and earth, as part of the world, of creation, of the cosmos? The latest Edition Klangschritte CD is devoted to this subject. The choral pieces of this work are peopled with angels and animals. Angels bring tidings from heaven and accompany the human beings while animals surround him and can become symbols for life situations. There are still a few treasures to be found in the Gregorian chant.
On this CD the Münchner Scholaren perform in a meditative dialogue with the percussionist Cristóbal Gajardo. He responds to the call of the old songs with his drums, but especially with the vibraphone.
Latin Chorale. From a Centre for Western Sacred Music.
Brother Gregor Baumhof OSB from the abbey in Niederaltaich, lecturer for many years at the Munich Academy of Theatre and Music, founded a centre for western sacred music eight years ago: the "Haus für Gregorianik". Located in the middle of Munich, at the Mariahilfplatz, it has developed an ever-growing annual program of seminars, lectures, worship services and concerts. One might ask since little else moves the human spirit like the simplicity and beauty of Gregorian chant, why has it not been added to the immaterial cultural heritage list? But Gregorian chant will live on, regardless. It’s not just a relic in a museum; it is performed in monastery choirs and increasingly by choruses and groups of singers. That was not always the case. For a long time unknown, the inner strength of this more than 1,200-year-old music began to be scientifically and artistically revived in the nineteenth century. First one had literally to learn how to read the music because it was captured in ornate notes, called "neumes", typical of the Carolingian period. Learning this art in the "Haus für Gregorianik" opens up a significant aspect of our culture. We have entered into a partnership with the "Haus für Gregorianik" and its director, Brother Gregor. One fruit of this collaboration is the "Edition Klangschritte", i.e. "edition of the sound echelons". Information about current events in the "Haus für Gregorianik" can be found at www.gregorianik.org
