The Schär coconut weaving mill.
For over 75 years in the idyllic municipalityof Eisenchmitt in the middle ofthe Vulkaneifel district in Rhineland-Palatinate,Germany, the company Schärhas been processing coconut threadsinto high-quality carpets and mats forindustrial and commercial use, as wellas private households. Schär obtainsthe natural coconut fiber from India andSri Lanka, but all steps in their furtherprocessing take place at their mill: inold, mechanical, environmentally-friendlyproduction plants that haveotherwise become quite rare inGermany.
A rugged, natural fiber. Coconut.
Coconut fibers are somewhat cumbersomeduring processing, but they haveunique characteristics: they storeexcess humidity, and thus harmonizeindoor climate, they don’t attract dustand are easy to clean. Subject to extremeconditions in nature, coconut fibersare accordingly resistant – productsmade out of them keep „forever“.Coconut is antibacterial, flame retardant, noise and heat insulating, breathableand anti-static. Dyed fabric shouldnot be constantly exposed to sunlight.Coconut mats have a rustic and ratherrough surface structure; the typicalirregularities in the yarn are inevitable.
A parking lot for your shoes.
Doormats are just as much a part ofwhat makes Schär shine as theirfamous red carpet. Mats made of coconutthreads in a traditional weavingarrangement (coconut velour “ExtraDouble”) with a dense, rough pile. Themat is given an extra-wide format sothat three to four pairs of shoes caneasily be parked right next to eachother. At 24 mm, the mat is extremelythick; the entire underside is coatedwith latex.
