Coconut Velour Doormat
The Schär coconut weaving mill.
For over 75 years in the idyllic municipality of Eisenchmitt in the middle of the Vulkaneifel district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, the company Schär has been processing coconut threads into high-quality carpets and mats for industrial and commercial use, as well as private households. Schär obtains the natural coconut fiber from India and Sri Lanka, but all steps in their further processing take place at their mill: in old, mechanical, environmentally-friendly production plants that have otherwise become quite rare in Germany.
A rugged, natural fiber. Coconut.
Coconut fibers are somewhat cumbersome during processing, but they have unique characteristics: they store excess humidity, and thus harmonize indoor climate, they don’t attract dust and are easy to clean. Subject to extreme conditions in nature, coconut fibers are accordingly resistant – products made out of them keep "forever". Coconut is antibacterial, flame retardant, noise and heat insulating, breathable and anti-static. Dyed fabric should not be constantly exposed to sunlight. Coconut mats have a rustic and rather rough surface structure; the typical irregularities in the yarn are inevitable.
A parking lot for your shoes.
Doormats are just as much a part of what makes Schär shine as their famous red carpet. Mats made of coconut threads in a traditional weaving arrangement (coconut velour "Extra Double") with a dense, rough pile. The mat is given an extra-wide format so that three to four pairs of shoes can easily be parked right next to each other. At 24 mm, the mat is extremely thick; the entire underside is coated with latex.
