Ceramic Portuguese Swallow

Product Information
Article Number 26601
As a harbinger of spring the custom throughout Portugal for more than a hundred years has been to hang these decorative hand painted ceramic barn swallows from house facades and balconies. This specimen was designed in 1891 by the famous Portuguese artist and cartoonist, Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro. His original designs can be viewed today in the renowned Tabacaria Monaco in Lisbon. From that time on, as a constant companion and "friend of the family" the ceramic bird became something of a national icon for the Portuguese people. Ours are manufactured in Caldas da Rainha, north of Lisbon.
