Certain foods simply do not taste right if eaten with a metal or silver spoon - a soft-boiled egg or caviar, for example. Spoons made from natural materials such as horn, bone and mother-of-pearl provide the only alternative for purists.
Horn, bone or mother-of-pearl should not be put in the dishwasher. Prolonged contact with heat or water can damage these natural materials.
