Healthy and Precious. Argan Oil from the Moroccan Arganeraie Biosphere Reserve.
The Berbers from Morocco have been using argan oil for thousands of years. It's employed in the kitchen where it is added to almost every dish. The oil is also used as a personal care item. This precious and rare oil has already established itself as an insider tip in Europe. And not without reason: The creamy oil with the nutty flavour tastes delicious, and it is also extraordinarily healthy. It consists of more than 80% unsaturated fatty acids, contains a high amount of Vitamin E and protects human cells with its antioxidants. When applied to the skin argan oil is quickly absorbed without leaving behind a slick or glistening film. It provides moisture which keeps the skin elastic and is compatible with skin that is sensitive or prone to irritation. The precious oil is extracted from the seeds of Argania in the Arganeraie. The argan trees (Argania spinosa) which are threatened with extinction grow solely in the area in the south-west of Morocco, between the Atlantic and the High and Lesser Atlas mountains. In order to protect Arganeraie forests and support the sustainable manufacture of argan oil with stone mills and hand pressing, UNESCO declared the area a "Biosphere Reserve" in 1998 and placed the traditional manufacturing of argan oil on the "Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity" in 2014.
Traditional production carried out by women. Hand-pressed argan oil.
The traditional production of argan oil is literally in the hands of women. It is women who carry out the many stages of work by hand: from the harvest of the fruits to peeling of the fruit pulp and cracking of the nuts, to the grinding, kneading and pressing of the seeds. The seeds are ground in stone mills, and the resulting paste is then pressed by hand. That is the most gentle kind of pressing, without heating or excessive pressure which otherwise might destroy the sensitive vitamins and effective ingredients. As a final step, the extracted argan oil is cautiously filtered and undergoes no further processing in order to preserve all of the precious contents and the natural argan aroma.
