Hanwag shoes – unlike the modern trend – are still shaped over a last and attached to the sole. The leather of the shaft is pulled over the last and fastened to the insole with brass tacks. This method takes more time, of course, but gives the shoe marvellous stability, helps it keep its shape longer, and means you can have it re-soled without difficulty.
The leather comes from a German tannery: a full-grain variety is used for the shaft – waxed, chrome-tanned and aniline-dyed; the inside of the shoe is lined with soft chrome-free leather.
Our hiking shoe has been made first and foremost with comfort in mind – there’s plenty of room for toe movement at the front, and the whole inside has been designed to minimize stitching and so prevent those ‘pressure areas’ that lead to blistering; both ankle, heel and toe areas are comfortably padded. The pleated tongue gives added comfort and freedom from pressure.
