The “collator“, as the Americans call this classic file holder, was invented in the 1940s. It’s a flexible, space-saving desk-top device, and ideal for sorting and prioritising paper work in progress. Even the longest model with 24 compartments and a fully-extended length of 2.5 metres can be usefully employed on your desk. Extended to a customary depth of 80 cm it is capable of taking piles of paper of up to 2.4 cm in thickness.
Incidentally: if you put it on the sideboard or the floor, the collator is excellent for keeping newspapers and periodicals.
