Yes, you guessed right: it’s for potatoes. This sort of container has been in use in Brandenburg for as long as potatoes have been grown there. It’s sometimes also used for carrying fruit and vegetables – or kindling wood. Traditional materials and handiwork are used in its making. Firstly, only selected local pine-wood planks. Then, the metal bands at the two ends. And, of course, the shape. The ‘Molle’ is made by the locals in a variety of sizes; we’ve chosen the 28-pound one – still easy to carry when full of potatoes – and (mathematicians will appreciate the logic), 4 of them will make up a hundredweight!
